With Advanced Standing
Requirements for candidates for admission to the radiography program
at the School of Medical Imaging include:
- The applicant must be 18 or older by December 31 of the starting
school year.
- The applicant must have a high school diploma or its equivalent
(G.E.D.)
- QPA must be a minimum 2.0 overall
- Applicant must have a background in math and science. Two of the
following math courses must be taken with a minimum C average –
Algebra I in the first year, and a second year in Algebra II, Geometry,
Trigonometry, or pre-calculus or their equivalents. Two of the following
sciences must be taken with a minimum C average – Biology I
in the first year and a second year of Biology II, chemistry, physics,
or advanced science course equivalent.
- SAT/PSAT/ACT are strongly recommended but not required.
Applicants must take a pre-entrance examination administered by the
program. Because certain physical capacities are essential to providing
patient care as a radiologic technologist, applicants must pass a physical
examination administered by UPMC Work Partners.
Students are selected by the Admissions Committee on the basis of past
academic record, character, grades on the pre-entrance examination,
and evaluation at the time of a personal interview.
Technical Standards
Applicants to the School of Medical Imaging should:
- be able to stand and walk for 80 percent of clinical time
- be able to assist, lift, and position patients for at least 20 percent
of clinical time
- have verbal and written skills sufficient to communicate with patients,
co-workers, and physicians
- have sufficient sight to observe condition of patients from behind
a control panel and to evaluate films
- have verbal skills sufficient for instructing patients
- have hearing sufficient to respond to patient needs, interact with
patients, and respond to audible sounds from equipment
- have motor skills sufficient to manipulate equipment and respond
to emergencies
- be able to work with both hands and fingers to perform movements
such as seizing, holding, grasping, and turning
- be able to perform frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling
of objects weighing more than 25 pounds
- be able to lift and transfer patients safely to and from the radiographic
table
- have sufficient intellectual and emotional skills to exercise discretion
Admission Procedure
Applications and credentials are being accepted for the January and
July classes. For the January class, the application deadline is September
1; for the July 2006 class, the deadline is March 1. All applications
received after these deadlines will be held for the application process
for the next class. The candidate must submit the following information
to the program:
- Once a complete application has been received, the Admissions Committee
will review transcripts to ensure admission requirements are met.
- Qualified applicants will be scheduled to take the Psychological
Services Bureau (PSB) Health Occupation Aptitude Examination. The
applicant will submit a money order for $10.00 made payable to PSB
or $10.00 cash for scoring the examination. During testing, a clinical
site preference form will be distributed.
- All applicants will be scheduled for an observation day in the Radiology
Department. This is a mandatory part of the admission process.
- Upon receipt of the exam results, those applicants receiving a scaled
percentile score average of 25 in the first four sections will be
scheduled for an interview.
- Interviews are conducted by at least two members of the Admissions
Committee.
- All interview scores will be averaged for a final interview score.
- Admission to the program is based on high school and/or college
grades, PSB health occupation aptitude examination score, and interview
score.
- Upon selection, the program will notify the applicant by mail of
their status.
- Acceptance of a position into the program shall be confirmed when
the student returns a status form with a $100.00 deposit.
Admission With Advanced Standing
It is the policy of the School of Medical Imaging to extend consideration
to students seeking to apply for admission with advanced standing based
on previous radiographic training in a program accredited by the Joint
Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. The student
must be or have been in good standing in that program, must complete
formal application procedures, and must request advanced standing.
